A Book Review and Reflection

I wasn’t near a bookstore or a library when I found myself craving something to read, but I had heard of The Correspondent by Virginia Evans. So I downloaded it on my Kindle (I mean really, what a time to be alive...having such easy quick access to books! Although I do miss bookstores, the delicious smell of new books, the feel of a book in my hands the pondering of what to read next...),— but I am so grateful to have downloaded this book!

It’s a fascinating story told entirely through letters. The writer, an older woman whose eyesight is failing, begins to confront her past through her correspondence with family, friends, and even a few infamous figures.

What drew me in most was her approach to forgiveness and the power of connection—as something that unfolds slowly, letter by letter, through the act of writing itself. There’s such honesty in her words. She shows how communication, even delayed or imperfect, can still be healing.

I found myself relating to her. She writes that it’s easier for her to put her thoughts into letters than to say them out loud — and I understand that. When I write, I feel like I can express my true self more clearly. Maybe even a little more colorfully. Writing lets me paint pictures with words, and I hope my readers can see what I feel.

Does that make sense? Read her book — I think you’ll enjoy it too. Follow her journey as she writes these letters. It’s a quiet, thoughtful story, and a true pleasure to read.
